Based in Madison American family insurance announced today that it is investing $ 1.2 million in four initiatives in Milwaukee called “Urban Future Centers.”
The company’s investment will be multi-year, with $ 100,000 committed to each initiative for three years. The four initiatives that American Family has identified as Urban Future Centers that will receive funding include:
- Sherman Phoenix, 3536 W. Fond du Lac Ave., Milwaukee – The Sherman Phoenix offers a space for small businesses offering a variety of food and wellness services. It also includes community spaces for hosting art exhibitions, STEAM programs, film screenings, and cultural events.
- Travel house, 2110 W. Scott St., Milwaukee – Journey House Brings Families on the South Side of Milwaukee Out of Poverty by Providing Adult Education, Youth Development, Workforce Preparation and Engagement family.
- The technological hub of the Milky Way – The Milky Way Tech Hub is made up of supporting organizations that serve black and brown innovators, creatives, scientists and technologists. Their mission is to ensure that black ownership and representation is increased through equitable participation in the technology and innovation economy.
- Young enterprising company – Young Enterprising Society is a project management company focused on entrepreneurship education in STEAM disciplines. STEAM programs are customizable and can be implemented during school hours, after-school programs, or as a summer crash course.
“This investment in Milwaukee neighborhoods will provide opportunity and access for youth and adults where they live,” said Jim Buchheim, Community and Social Impact Manager for American Family. “By identifying and responding to needs and providing support directly to neighborhoods, the centers of the urban future will help close the equity gap for people of color and foster economic empowerment.”
