Thunderbird Games is a weekend event where 11-18 year olds organize games and outdoor activities for 5-10 year olds.
The nonstop weekend begins with youngsters from BSA, Explorer and Venturing Scout units heading to Croton Point Park on Friday evening (October 15th).
They come from the Greater Hudson Valley Council’s large footprint in Westchester, Putnam, Dutchess, Rockland, Orange and Sullivan (NY) and Pike County (Pa.) Counties.
They camp on Friday evening to begin setting up their stations on Saturday morning.
There are over 40 games and program areas, including triangle stilts, chariot races, rock climbing, a monkey bridge, giant slingshot, and a haunted house.
The Cubs and their families begin arriving at noon on Saturday. By noon, the park is usually filled with over 3,000 visitors. Cubs are free to engage in activities that interest them and move freely from one activity to another.
Older Scouts plan, organize and manage activities under the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) âscout-ledâ model. It is an opportunity for them to develop their leadership skills by working together to create an activity for Cubs. As the Cubs move from activity to activity, they engage with the older Boy Scouts as role models.
The fun doesn’t stop on Saturday night. The Cubs and their families camp in County Park, where fireworks are launched later in the evening. It is always a memorable event and invariably the start of the year of Scouting is bright.
