Clubhouse Columns: A Look At AVSC’s Growing Summer Mountain Bike Program

Aspen Valley Ski and Snowboard Club

The Aspen Valley Ski and Snowboard Club has been a leader in youth development in the Roaring Fork Valley and a trusted source of recreational, fundamental and competitive winter sports for nearly 85 years.

If you’ve been riding the beautiful valley bike trails this summer, or discovering the thrilling features of biking at Crown Mountain Park, you’ve likely encountered some heart-wrenching little runners, speeding, throwing, and running through the terrain. And there’s a good chance the rippers you’ve seen are part of AVSC’s summer mountain biking program.

If you are familiar with AVSC, you may be familiar with the growing summer recreational bike options that we have on offer. If you are not familiar with AVSC then I will give you a little insight on where we have been and where we are going.

AVSC is the largest and oldest nonprofit in the Roaring Fork Valley, serving youth in all public and private schools, from Aspen to Rifle. Since 1937, we have been training and inspiring children through winter sports to excel as individuals and as athletes. AVSC has built a thriving community of over 2,500 winter athletes. It’s what we’re known for and what we do best.

For years, when the summer months rolled around, things slowed down for us at the club. Competitive athletes would continue to train and train, but a good portion of our recreational athletes went on vacation, enrolled in other summer programs / camps, or got summer employment. We failed to engage with these children, and it was clear that for many families there was a need for summer programs.

Mountain biking was a natural solution and the best complement to our winter sports. AVSC launched our Summer Mountain Biking Program to create a fully immersive, educational, engaging mountain biking experience after our polls indicated families want more recreational and foundational summer programs.

Over the past six years, the summer mountain biking programming at AVSC has grown into another trusted source of fun, engaging, safe and recreational time spent outdoors for our community, and we are just getting started.

We have seen strong growth in participation in cycling programs from year to year, which gives us confidence in our decision to offer summer cycling programs. Last summer we had over 500 athletes enrolled in our cycling programs, almost doubling our participation compared to summer 2020. The program offerings range from children ages 7 to 13 in combination to a half. daytime (pre-devo shredders), full daytime programming (Devo Dirt Shredders) and Bike & Build (a day-long experience that uniquely balances ride and mechanics); options that adapt to the schedules of most families.

At AVSC, we are always looking for ways to connect with athletes and families who are not currently involved in our programs or who want extended programming during the summer months. We are delighted to have found a path in cycling and look forward to continuing our growth in the sport. Thank you to Crown Mountain Park for allowing our athletes and coaches to ride and improve their skills.

Please contact our team at AVSC for more information on all the ways you can connect with AVSC – winter, summer or year round. We are ready to create memories and experiences with your children!
