“Dreams are a magical place”

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – A nonprofit organization works to find artist in children and teach them skills they can use well beyond their childhood.

This is the mission of the Dreams Center for Art Education.

“Dreams is a magical place,” says Amy Jeffrey, interim executive director of the Dreams Center for Art Education. “It’s a place where all children between the ages of 8 and 17 come to explore the creative expressions of their talents. “

The Dreams Center, located at 901 Fanning St., offers art classes, music classes, pottery classes, to name a few. It is open to all children free of charge.

“Dreams is 100% tuition-free for all the kids who need us, and we love exploring the arts to achieve the creative development goals of young people here,” says Jeffrey. “It’s a place for them to build their confidence and have family and community involvement.

Liz Wells, the program director at Dreams, says watching how kids grow up once they enter the program is phenomenal.

“They thrive,” says Wells. “They didn’t know they could play drums because a drum was never presented to them. They didn’t know they could do watercolors because before Dreams they didn’t have any experience with watercolors. So when you open these new avenues for students, who knows what other doors open. “

The Dreams Center currently runs 25 classes per week. These classes include American Sign Language, dancing, yoga – even creating comics and photography.

Jeffrey says the organization depends on donations. Some donors contribute once a month. Others make a one-time donation.

“We’re a non-profit organization and, like probably every non-profit in the world right now, we’ve had some tough years,” says Jeffrey. “The best way to donate is to come, take a tour of Dreams, get to know us. Let’s share this magic with you. We have so many alumni who come back and say, “Because of dreams, I’m doing this. Because of Dreams, I’m going to college. Thanks to Dreams, I joined the military. Or find a career that really gives them joy and fulfillment, and that’s what keeps us going.
