Edward Joseph Soares Obituary (1925 – 2021) – Shelton, CT

Reverend Dr Edward Joseph Soares passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his loved ones, on December 27, 2021, at the age of 96.
Edward was born on October 2, 1925, in New Bedford, MA, in the Rivet Street family home of his parents Manuel Silva Soares and Anna Daniels Soares. As the country entered the Great Depression, his father found work in New York, so Edward moved as a child to the Upper West Side. Edward loved growing up in the city, playing stickball in the streets and riding the subway to Yankee Stadium. He was always grateful for his good Catholic upbringing. In high school, he was called to become a Catholic priest. He often fondly recalled his seminary years.
Edward was ordained on May 3, 1951 in St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York. A brilliant and passionate student, he was selected to attend the Gregorian University in Rome for a doctorate in sacred theology. While studying in Europe for several years, he had the opportunity to travel and learn Latin, Greek, Spanish and Italian.
When he returned home to the United States in 1954, he happily worked as a pastor at St. Gregory Parish. He liked to take the group of young people on excursions, especially to see American Bandstand. Later, he taught high school Latin and oversaw the CCD program for the NYC Diocese. In 1964, he became chaplain at the College of New Rochelle (CNR) where he took great pleasure in teaching theology.
At the CNR, he met his future wife, Denise Soebbing. They were married on August 30, 1969 at the United Nations Chapel. In 1974, Edward and Denise moved their growing family from Queens to Baldwin, Long Island. In their beloved Victorian home, they raised their three children, Christiana, Katharine and Michael.
Edward was a devoted and active father. He would tease that one of his greatest accomplishments was teaching his kids to ride the shifter well enough to pass their driving tests on their first try. What they will remember is how he instilled in them a love of learning, reading and helping others.
Edward worked for the Young Men‘s Christian Association for 20 years as director of student counseling. At age 65, he returned to full-time ministry. He was blessed with wonderful experiences and memorable friendships at Chelsea Community Church in Manhattan; Fourth Avenue Presbyterian in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn; Fall River Parish United Presbyterian Church, MA; and Calvary United Presbyterian in Fall River, MA.
Edward was a New Yorker at heart; however, on his “first retirement”, he and his wife moved to Tiverton, RI, and spent many happy years together at their home in Stafford Pond. During what he and his wife would call their “Golden Pond” years, he was thrilled to become a grandfather to six grandchildren.
Edward will forever be in the hearts of his dear children: Christiana Jones and her husband Jamie; Katharine Lucas and her husband Christian; Michael Soares and his partner Jiff Martin, as well as his beloved grandchildren: Jackson, Sam and Juliet Jones; Graylin Lucas; and Elliot and Robin Soares. He was also much loved by his extended family, including his nephews and nieces.
When his wife Denise died in 2014, Edward moved to live alongside his daughter Christiana and her family at Jones Family Farms in Shelton, CT. He spent his last eight years on the farm, surrounded by the loving Jones family, as well as their wonderful, very dedicated caregivers, including Lorene Swarni, Santa Santana, Regina Mappa and Sandra Lahey.
A memorial service to celebrate Edward’s long life will be held in Shelton, CT on Saturday afternoon, April 23. For those interested, please send an email to the family at [email protected] for more details.
Edward has supported many causes and organizations; he would be honored if anyone wished to donate money or time to a cause close to his heart.
