Evergreen Youth & Family Services received an $ 8,000 grant from the AT&T Foundation to help support the Youth Crisis Shelter for homeless youth in the Bemidji area.

This $ 8,000 grant from the AT&T Foundation will be used to support the youth shelter’s daily meal program. The Evergreen Shelter serves at least three meals and two snacks per day, every day of the year, to approximately 275 youth who stay at the shelter. Shelter staff prepare healthy meals in their commercial kitchen and serve meals to “family style” youth in residence. All food is purchased at local grocery stores, meat markets, and the North Country Food Bank.

“Our mission is to strengthen youth, preserve families and build relationships in northern Minnesota. We work hard to provide a welcoming, safe and supportive place to call home for young people in our area who are experiencing an immediate personal or family crisis, ”said Ebony Warren, Executive Director of Evergreen Youth & Family Services. “Part of this is providing healthy meals and snacks for our youth. We are delighted to receive this grant from the AT&T Foundation which will support our shelter’s food budget until next fall.

Evergreen’s Youth Crisis Shelter also provides emergency shelter, food, clothing and personal hygiene items to youth aged 9 to 17 who remain at the shelter. The shelter serves 15 rural counties in northwestern Minnesota, where homelessness continues to be higher, among children and youth. The Evergreen Shelter is said to be the only “early intervention shelter” for runaway and homeless youth, as well as high-risk youth and their families in rural areas of north-central and northwestern Minnesota.

“The AT&T Foundation is proud to support Evergreen Youth & Family Services and its mission to help homeless youth in the Bemidji area,” said Paul Weirtz, president of AT&T Minnesota. “The Evergreen Shelter not only provides a safe home away from home, but also supports the overall health, school attendance and performance of young people in need. “
