Tarkwa – Abosso Gold Fields Limited (AGL), working with three youth groups in its host communities, organized a cleanup in Hunni-Valley and Damang communities to mark World Cleanup Day on Saturday.

A youth initiative from Wassa, Damang, Hunni-Valley and Zero Waste Bosomtwe, was completed by the GLA who provided tools and vehicles for the exercise.

Tools such as wheelbarrows, cutlasses, rakes, long brooms and shovels were provided by the gold company to aid in the cleanup exercise.

Hand sanitizers, soaps and food were also provided to the young people who participated in the exercise.

In total, the gold company spent approximately GH ¢ 12,000 for the year.

Mr. Ebenezer Afful and Mr. Justice Frimpong, the leaders of the youth group led many able-bodied young people to clean the streets, including the palace, markets, riverside and Hunni-Valley bus station.

Speaking after the exercise, Judge Frimpong, Head of Zero Waste Bosomtwe, expressed his gratitude to the young people who took advantage.

He also thanked the assembly members, opinion leaders and leaders who participated.

Mr Frimpong said that cleaning up the community would wipe out communicable diseases, cholera and malaria.

He was of the opinion that residents would maintain cleanliness in the areas where the exercise took place.

Hunni-Valley youth leader Mr Ebenezer Afful said the exercise was not going to be a nine-day wonder.

For now, the tools provided by the mining company to facilitate the exercise have been handed over to the Water and Sanitation Community (WASAN) for future use.

GLA’s community affairs manager, Razak Abdel Yakubu, said the initiative was the idea of the three youth groups and his company only came to support them with basic tools.

He expressed the hope that in the next fiscal year, Abosso would be added to the list.
