Kenya: Chebukati says no funds available in event of new election in August polls


Nairobi – The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) says it has no funds in the event of a runoff in the August elections.

Speaking after a consultative meeting with religious leaders on Tuesday, President Wafula Chebukati, however, said the commission was ready to handle the general elections.

“We don’t have a budget for a re-vote. We don’t plan a re-vote. We are planning a general election in August. In case of any eventuality, we will deal with them when they come up,” he said. declared. .

He also said civic education has not been as widespread this time around due to budget constraints.

“As a commission, we only received the election budget this year and we did what we could with it even though we had a deficit. However, we have two civic educators in each ward,” he said. declared.

He called on stakeholders to help where they can to enable the IEBC to fulfill its constitutional mandate in the August 9 elections.

The consultative meeting brought together various religious organizations in the country including Hindu Council of Kenya, National Council of Churches Kenya, National Forum of Muslim Leaders among others.
