Sophie Pernikoff, 88, of Kingston, died Sunday, August 29, 2021, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, she was the daughter of the late Jacob Chaim and Rachel Brisman Glustein and was a member of Congregation Ohav Zedek and several other religious organizations.
In 1945, at the age of 12, she went to Bais Yaakov Teachers Seminary in Williamsburg, NY, to pursue higher Jewish education, which was not available in her hometown.
She married in 1949 to Rabbi Mayer Pernikoff, a rabbinical student at the time.
Together, they settled in the Wyoming Valley, where they devoted themselves to Jewish education and outreach. She supported her husband in all his communal work during nearly 50 years of marriage.
Affectionately known as “Geveres,” she taught Kindergarten and Grade 1 Hebrew from the opening of the United Hebrew Institute Jewish School in Kingston until it closed some 65 years later. Almost a thousand students have benefited from his dynamic supervision during his tenure.
Together, their home was an oasis, open to anyone in need of physical, emotional or financial support.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband.
She is survived by her children, Mrs. (Louis) Leeba Friedman; Dr Barry (Franceen) Pernikoff; David (Naomi) Pernikoff; Ms. (Moshe) Tova Underweiser; BenZion (Esther) Pernikoff; and Mrs. (Erik) Aliza Frank. She is also survived by her grand and great-grandchildren.
She was buried in Har Menuchos Cemetery in Jerusalem, Israel.
Shiva’s services will be observed at his home at 546 Westmoreland Ave., Kingston, until 3 p.m. Friday.
